The following features of the alveoli help in easy exchange of gases:

1) the alveoli have very thin walls which help the gases to easily exchange through them.

2) there is a dense network of blood capillaries in these alveoli which help the gases to easily pass through them. These capillaries let the oxygen incorporate in the blood stream.

The alveoli help in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our blood stream. The carbon dioxide from the our cells is removed through the alveoli and the oxygen that we inhale is added into the blood stream.
