◆ Categories of photosynthetic pigments -

• Two categories of of photosynthetic pigments are - essential pigments and accessory pigments.

(1) Essential photosynthetic pigments -

• Chlorophyll is the green-colored pigment essential for photosynthesis in plants.
• It is considered to be primary pigment and is available in two forms chlorophyll a (most important) & chlorophyll b.
• Chlorophyll absorbs light required for the process of photosynthesis.

(2) Accessory pigments for photosynthesis -

• Carotenes and Xanthophylls are called accessory pigments required for photosynthesis.
• They absorb light from spectrum not covered by chlorophyll.
