Q. Why Asia is called as "Continent of Extremes" ?
A: Asia has some of the extreme points on the earth, which includes:
- World's Highest point: Mount Everest an elevation of about 8,850m.
- World's Lowest point: Challengers Deep in the world's deepest oceanic trench known as Mariana Trench, stands an elevation of about −10,995m below sea level situated near to US territory Island Guam in northern mariana islands in the deepest ocean, The Pacific Ocean.
- World's Largest Plains: The Western Siberian Plains also known as Zapadno-Sibirskaya Ravnina, is a large plain that occupies the western portion of Siberia in Russia comprises an area of about 3 million km².
- World's longest non-polar glacier: Fedchenko glacier is a large glacier in the Yazgulem Range, Pamir Mountains, of north-central Gorno-Badakhshan province, Tajikistan. The glacier is long and narrow, currently extending for 77 kilometres and covering over 700 square kilometres.
- World's lowest elevation on land: Dead Sea, a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. Its surface elevation and shores are −430.5 metres below sea level.
- World's Largest and Highest plateau: The Tibetan Plateau, also known in China as the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau or the Qing–Zang Plateau or as the Himalayan Plateau in India, is a vast elevated plateau in South Asia, Central Asia and East. It has an area of about 2.5 million km² and has an elevation of 5000m above sea level.
- Verkhoyansk in Russia is the coldest inhabited place in the world. In winters, it's temperature drops to a around −70°C. On the other hand, Jacobabad in Pakistan has an average summer temperature of about 50°C making it the hottest place in asia.
- World's highest mountain range: Himalayas that has an average elevation of it's peaks is above 6100m from sea level. The Himalayan range passes some of the South Asian countries across some 5 countries that includes: India, China, Pakistan, Nepal & Bhutan. It's western extension is HinduKush in Afghanistan and it's eastern extension is Arakan Yoma in Myanmar. Himalayas has the rank 6th in terms of world's longest mountain range on above sea level that has it's length of about 2,600kms and has a width of 340kms.
- World's largest Delta: Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta or Sunderban Delta situated in Bangladesh and in India that empties out to Bay of Bengal. It's area covering over 10,000km².
- World's Deepest Canyon: The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon (or Tsangpo Canyon), along the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, is regarded by some as the deepest canyon in the world at 5,500 metres (18,000 ft) and at 504.6 kilometres (313.5 mi) is slightly longer than the Grand Canyon in the United States, making the World's Longest Canyon.
- The Malay Archipelago is the world's largest archipelago which comprises thousands of islands including parts of Indonesia and Philippines.
- Caspian Sea, The world's saltwater largest lake in terms of area has an area about 371,000 km². Lake Baikal in Russia is the world's deepest lake and the world's largest freshwater lake in terms of volume. It has a volume of over 23,620 km³ and has a max depth of 1,642m.
- Mawsynram in Meghalaya is the wettest place on the earth receiving about 11,873mm of rainfall annually while the Thar Desert running into India and Pakistan doesn't receive even 250mm of rainfall annually.
- World's Largest Peninsula: Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula of world which occupies an area of 3.2 million square Km. It is located in middle east and comprises of 7 countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.
