Answer:

The basic properties of sound are: pitch, loudness and tone.

Explanation:

There are five main characteristics of sound waves: wavelength, amplitude, frequency, time period, and velocity. The wavelength of a sound wave indicates the distance that wave travels before it repeats itself. The wavelength itself is a longitudinal wave that shows the compressions and rarefactions of the sound wave.

  • Three characteristics of sound are:
  1. Loudness:- A sound becomes louder when more and more sound energy enters our ears per second than before. This will happen when the source vibrates with larger amplitude. The loudness of sound can be expressed in decibels (dB).
  2. Pitch:- The shrillness of a sound is known as its pitch. Sound waves with high frequency produce sounds of high pitch, and those with low frequency have low pitch. The pitch of a sound depends on how quickly the waves vibrate. Musical sounds of specific pitch are called notes.
  3. Quality:- Quality or timber is another characteristic of sound. It is that characteristic of musical sound which enables us to distinguish between two sounds of same pitch and same loudness. Two sounds produced by different musical instruments like violin, sitar etc., can be distinguished from one another because sound produced by them differ in quality.
