Galvanising is a method of rust prevention. The iron or steel object is coated in a thin layer of zinc. This stops oxygen and water reaching the metal underneath - but the zinc also acts as a sacrificial metal. Zinc is more reactive than iron, so it oxidises in preference to the iron object.

The best way is to use alloys having non-rusting properties.
The best is Stainless steel. These days stainless steel is generally used as a substitute of iron.
By external method like galvanizing, we can prevent rusting too. The metal zinc is used for galvanization. If the iron is exposed to corrosion, the zinc doesn't let and get corrodes first.
Applying organic layer is another way of preventing rusting. The substance used as organic layer acts as a barrier to water or moisture and prevents corrosion.
