Cells are the fundamental unit of life whereas Atoms are the smallest particle of matter.

Explanation:

  • We know, cells are the fundamental structural unit of life which make up all living organisms. This is because, at the cellular level, a cell itself can carry out various life processes to keep it alive. This forms the basis of all living organisms which help them carry out the vital life processes for survival and that differentiates a living organism from a non living organism.
  • Atom is the smallest particle of the matter which retains all the chemical properties of an element. Atoms join together to form molecules which in turn make up all the matter we can see around us. But, at the cellular level, these molecules and atoms cannot perform various life processes to keep an organism alive.

Hence, Living things are made up of cells while non- living things are made up of molecules and atoms.

Cells are the basic unit of life.

Atoms are the smallest unit of matter.

Molecules are the smallest unit of a compound.

Explanation:

  • The structural and functional unit of life is termed as a cell. It is simply a  mass of cytoplasm that is generally bounded by a cell membrane from the external side. They have nuclei that are known to perform various tasks. Cells together make up tissues that inturn from an organ system and finally an organism. Therefore living things are made up of cells.
  • Atoms are composed of a nucleus, protons, neutrons as well as electrons. It is the smallest unit that together forms a molecule which inturn forms a non-living thing.
  • Living organisms can carry out many activities like respiration and reproduction etc because they are made up of cells.
  • Atoms and molecules are not able to reproduce. Therefore, non- living things are made up of molecules and atoms.
