Regionalism has remained perhaps the most potent force in Indian politics ever since independence
Explanation:
- As we look at our own history, we could see that there is persistent demand that the Indian political system values its federal characteristics. In fact, there is a need for capital and capacity decentralization, both at state level & at grass root level.
- The federal government has made the work of democratic rule at all levels too difficult by complex ethnic groups and their continuing struggle to expand their sovereignty, as reflected in the proposal to create independent Statehood.
- The movement for federalism in India is essentially a fight for greater independence, in which people will find their capacity & self‐respect in social identity, organisational structure & institutional frameworks.
- India's current politics are divided into two types of politics, regional and national. Policy making is characterized by central-level power politics & regional politics is characterized by state-level power politics.
- Central political parties decide national policy and state political parties decide regions. Still, though only in restricted places, both sides faced each other. Powerful regional parties may present their party nominee to the Center to form coalitions with national political parties. National political parties may have regional organization, however they will prioritize regional issues & demands, and they want more regional leadership participation.
- The autonomy campaign emerged from the regions either located on the frontier or not in the protected areas of the majority of the country's people. Throughout the Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and north-eastern areas, the regionalist movements were powerful & situated in the periphery of the nation. There is no significant presence in these areas of dominant Indian communities.
- Regionalism and federalism are at issue here, in terms of Indian federalism, the debate over greater sovereignty for the States. This is generally regarded as a 'Union-State relations' issue, namely the centralized Union power versus the interests of the States.
