The ovules inside a flowers ovary are attached via funiculi, the plant part equivalent to an umbilical cord. The part of the ovary where the funiculus attaches is referred to as the placenta. The term placentation most commonly refers to the arrangement of placentasinside a flower or fruit.

The placenta can be defined as an organ formed by the sustained apposition or fusion of fetal membranes and parential tissue for physiological exchange. This definition is modified from the original Mossman definition, which constrained placentation in animals to only those instances where it occurred in the uterus.
