One is main scale and the other is vernier scale .
The principle used is that using two scales whose divisions differ by a small amount ,
we can measure this small amount . Thus the least count is the difference between one main scale division and the vernier scale division .
Suppose that in a main scale each division is 1 mm.
Using this scale we cannot measure a length less than 1 mm.
If the actual length is 6.4 mm using this scale , we will say the length is more than 6 mm . How much more we cannot tell . The least measurement is 1 mm.
Now use another scale whose division is 0.9 mm .

If zero of main scale is made to coincide with the zero of the vernier , the 10 th division of vernier will coincide with the 9 mm division of main scale . ( This should be , since the length of vernier scale was 9 mm.
Thus the zero of vernier and the 10 th vernier divisions alone coincide . No other division coincides with any of the main scale division . ( Check it by calculation )
If we move the zero of the vernier through 0.1 mm ( the difference of one main scale division and one vernier division ), Each vernier division will move through 0.1 mm .
The first division will move 0.1 mm , that means it will coincide with the 1st main scale division . Conversely , if a main scale division coincides with the first vernier, the zero of vernier has moved 0.1 mm from a main scale division. No other vernier division will coincide with any of the main scale division. ( check your self)
If the zero of vernier moves 0.4 mm , it can be easily seen that the fourth vernier will coincide with a main scale and so on.
Thus the principle is the difference between a main scale and vernier scale is best utilized .
Thanks to Vernier .
