Lok Adalat is one of the Alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in India, it is a forum where cases pending or at pre litigation stage in a court of law are settled. They have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Lok adalat is basically a system in which disputes which can be settled between the parties are resolved through amicable settlement rather than following due process of law. It's a Alternative Redressal system in which any pending dispute which is compoundable can be compromised or settled. In lok adalat it's not only judges who decide case but it consist of bench which includes the members who can be sitting or retired judge and a member from legal profession and/or social worker. Lok adalat is a way to decrease the burden of cases pending in the courts by reaching the amicable settlement.
