Reasons for the Revolt of 1857: a. Economic Exploitation: Exploitation of Economic Resources: The British exploited the resources of the country. India was forced to export raw materials from Britain at low rates. Plantation products and food grains were exported to Britain. While no import duty was levied on manufactured British goods, higher import duties were levied on Indian goods exported to Britain. This led to the decline of handicraft and many ancillary industries in India.

Drain of Wealth: After establishing their rule in Bengal, the British started purchasing raw materials from India which meant being exported to England from Indian revenue. Salaries and pensions of British officers were also paid from Indian revenue. This marked the beginning of the withdrawal of Indian money to Britain.

Decay of cottage and handicrafts industry: The Indian handicrafts industry started to decline due to English free trade policy. Indian goods were not able to compete with cheap English machine-made goods. In addition, higher trade duties were imported on Indian goods entering Britain. This led to loss of livelihood of millions of artisans and weavers.

Exploitation of the Indian farmer: The British imposed high taxes on the Indian farmers. For example, the land revenue in Bengal was greatly increased by the British. Many farmers had to sell their land because they were not able to pay the increase in revenue of the land. The merchants and money-lenders who became the owners of the land did nothing to improve the quality of the land as they were concerned only with the collection of land revenue. As a result, the condition of the Indian farmer deteriorated

.B. Racial discrimination: The British racially discriminated against Indians. The British believed that they were superior to Indians and followed a policy of contempt towards Indians. Indians were ill-treated and insulted. The British called Muslims cruel and dishonest. Such acts of injustice alienated the British from the Indian public. C. Social reasons
