Long live the king' is something that is usually shouted to praise or compliment the king, which also means the people are well wishing the king with long life. In the poem ' the tale of melon city', there is a irony that the king himself gets hanged due to his own accusation. Hence the people now say ' the king is dead' instead of 'long live the king'.

This question is from chapter The Tale of The Melon City by Vikram Seth (XI English Core) book, Snapshot.

This is quite a humorous poem. The expression ‘Long live the king the king is dead’ is quite paradoxical. The king had ordered his own execution that pacified the people gathered at the execution site. After the king had died the courtiers shouted, ‘Long live the king the king is dead!’
