Humans show a remarkable behavioral and cultural adaptation to the aridity and unpredictability of deserts. The traditions derived there have influenced human and biological communities. Plant and animals from these harsh landscapes have played a major role in the evolution of modern human societies. For instance the domestication of cattle, sheep and goats began in the dry lands of West Asia near the Arabian Deserts, the domestication of llamas and alpacas  in the Andean Puna of South America. Dry lands have been the cradle of agricultural societies. Wheat, barley, corn and squash are some of the crops from the dry lands.
