Although the knee is a hinge joint, it can also rotate somewhat as it moves. The quadriceps muscles at the front of the thigh straighten the leg, whereas the hamstring muscles in the rear of the thigh (hamstrings) allow the leg to bend at the knee. When you straighten your leg, the quadricep muscles strain on the quadricep tendon, which pulls the kneecap outwards. The hamstring muscles contract when you bend it, pulling the tibia backwards and causing the knee to flex. Certain factors, such as soft-tissue restrictions and muscle tightness, affect the knee's range of motion.
