Lord Canning, the last Governor General and the first Viceroy under the crown (the term governor General changed to Viceroy in his time- 01 November 1858), visited Shimla in 1860. In 1858, Queen Victoria appointed him the first viceroy of the subcontinent.

Hope it helps.
