Lord Wellesley, Governor General India(1798-1805) followed the system of Subsidiary Alliances

Under this system, the princely states of India had to come into an alliance with the British East India Company. It stated that the states were not allowed to form any agreements with other countries except Britain. They had to abide by the British laws otherwise their states would be annexed.

This was a form of British indirect rule over India.
