Lord William Bentinck passed an Act in 1829 to abolish Sati due to the efforts of c) Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Sati practice is an obsolete funeral custom in which a widow immolates herself on her husband.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was personally hurt when her sister-in-law committed sati. From 1812 onwards, he started a fierce campaign against sati practice.
Hence, Lord William Bentinck put ban on 4 December 1829.
