Dear Diary,
How are you? This might come across as a silly question, but I believe that in this age of non-existent mobile phones and in the absence of instant replies from across the globe, you are the only one who will reply to me at the earliest. Or so I believe. Anyway, you are now my best secret keeper, since my best friend, who lives 2000 kilometres away from me, is not able to hear me rant every night, like he used to, back in the days.
It feels like yesterday, when I was leaning over a bowl of ramen and some sushi to click a pic and share them with my friends over Snapchat. It feels like an eternity since I have updated my location on Facebook and let people know what’s on my mind. People have lost touch with me, or should I say, I have lost touch with many of the people I cared about, and I have missed more birthdays than I can remember.
It is true that the banishment of mobile phones and cell phone towers have made use healthier. They have made our bodies last longer, but at what cost? The cost of being alone. The cost of being disconnected with the outer world. Benefits might outweigh this instance, but life has become kind of mundane and uninteresting. The only way I now know about the latest meme is if it comes in the newspaper. The only way I can show support to any social cause is if any NGO hosts a local event for the cause.
Health is wealth. But as humans, we had become so dependent on our mobile phones that it had become a part of our mental and social well-being. And since their banishment, mental health has taken a hit. Even for a rant, I have to wait for weeks for my best friend to reply, and believe me, it is not easy.
Gone are the days when Google Duo made you feel at home, even when you were miles away. Festivals and birthdays have gone back to being wishes over the postal services, taking away the digital yet personal touch it had.
