In the advancing monsoon, the Southwest winds prevail which rain in and near the Western Ghats, leaving Tamil Nadu, which lies in the rain shadow region. Rain shadow region have relatively little precipitation due to the effect of a topographic barrier, especially a mountain range, that causes the prevailing winds to lose their moisture on the Windward side, causing the Leeward side to by dry. This exactly happens with Tamil Nadu. That is why Tamil Nadu experiences low rainfall during the Southwest summer monsoon.
