The Bay of Bengal receives a lot of fresh water from rivers like the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Krishna etc. The precipitation level over Bay of Bengal is also high. This combination of fresh river water and rain water, lowers the salinity of Bay of Bengal considerably, to as low as 31 ppt.

Salinity of seas and oceans depend upon the inflow of fresh water and the level of evaporation. When evaporation is more, the salt contents concentrate, increasing the salinity of water.

The salinity of water in the Bay of Bengal is very low.

This is because the bay receives lot of freshwater in the form of rain and from the runoff of the surrounding rivers: Ganga, Brahmaputra, Irrawady, Godawari and others.

This is so much that, if all the freshwater that the bay receives during the year be spread uniformly over the entire surface, it would form a layer over a metre thick.
