There are 99 runners in Lucy's school.

Given

In Lucy's school, they celebrating Easter by conducting a race.

Winner in the race will get a basket of chocolate eggs.

Lucy won the place of 50th runner position in the school.

To find how many runners are in Lucy's school :

From the given question, they assuming that no two runners are the same speed so Lucy having one possibility of winning the race (i.e.,) 1/50.

Sample space of winners is 50.

                    Lucy is 50th slowest runner.

So, Probability of winning is 1/50.

Let assume that Lucy have an one chance of winning the race. From the data it is clear that Lucy is 50th slowest runner so, before Lucy there are 49 runners. Lucy have chance of winning the race so, after Lucy there are 49 runners.

Total number of runners = Number of runners before Lucy + Number of runners after Lucy + Lucy have an one chance to win the race.

                                         = 49 + 49 + 1

Total number of runners = 99.

Therefore, total number of runners participated in the race is 99.
