lunar eclipse occurs on a full moon night.the earth revolves around the sun and the moon rotates around the earth.a time comes when the sun , the earth and the moon comes in one straight line.at this point of time the moon cannot be seen because of the shadow caused by the earth which falls on it.as the moon doesn't have its own light , it is not visible.
the sun in present first , then comes the  earth and at last is the moon.this is the position.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow). This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned (in "syzygy") exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon.
