Lungs always contain a residual volume of air because sometimes in emergency when the person is unable to get sufficient amount of oxygen then his/her body uses that air to save his/her life.

Monish997: Lungs always have residual volume of air to increase the time for exchange of O2 and CO2 in the alveoli.
