Marked Price ( MP ) = $ 40

Discount percentage ( d % ) = 20 %

Discount ( d ) = 20 % of $ 40 = 20 / 100 * 40 = 2 * 4 = $ 8

Selling Price ( SP ) = MP - d = $ 40 - $ 8 = $ 32

Tax percentage ( T % ) = 5 %

Tax ( T ) = 5 % of $ 32 = 5 / 100 * 32 = 160 / 100 = $ 1.6

Actual Price ( inclusive of tax ) = SP + T = $ 32 + $ 1.6 = $ 33.6 = $ 33.60

Hence,

The required answer = $ 33.60

So,

The correct answer is option ( D ).

retail price of the shirt = $40

.
discount given = 20%

.
Find the discount:
-------------------------

discount = 20% of retail price

.
= 20% of 40 = 0.2 × 40 = $8

.

Find the new price:
---------------------------

new price = price of shirt after the discount

.
new price = retail price - discount

.
= $40 - $8 = $32

.
Find the tax:
------------------

money she paid as a tax = 5 % of new price

.
= 5% of 32 = 0.05 × 32 = $1.60

.
Total money she paid for shirt

.
= new price + tax = $32 + $1.60

.
= $33.60

Answer :
------------

option (D) is correct $33.60
