Madras University was set up in 1857, while the Aligarh University came to be established in 1920 (it was started as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875).

The Madras University has 85 departments covering the various subjects of Arts and Science. The Aligarh University has 10 departments.

The former was set up to meet the demand for higher education among the public while the latter was set up to build competence among Muslims in the field of English, the new field of sciences that were coming up then and to improve their political influence in Northern India.
