Magellan and his crew noticed that the land south of his passageway was so cold, that the native people were forced to huddle over fires. This is why the southern tip of South America is called Tierra del Fuego, or "Land of Fire". Why is Tierra del Fuego the coldest part of South America?

Answer:

The coldest part of the continent is in the extreme southern tip, in the area called Tierra del Fuego; in the coldest month of the year, which is July, it is as cold as 0°C (32°F) there. The highest temperature of the continent is reached in a small area of northern Argentina, and is about 42°C (108°F). It's situated near the pole so, it's cold.

I hope this helps..
