Magnesium and Lithium have similar properties due to diagonal relationship. But sodium, being in same group as lithium also shows some similarity to lithium. So does sodium show similarity to magnesium?

Answer:A diagonal relationship is said to exist between certain pairs of diagonally adjacent elements in the second and third periods (first 20 elements) of the periodic table. These pairs (lithium (Li) and magnesium (Mg), beryllium (Be) and aluminium (Al), boron (B) and silicon (Si) etc.) exhibit similar properties; for example, boron and silicon are both semiconductors, forming halides that are hydrolysed in water and have acidic oxides.

Hope this helps

Karsker: Thanks for answering, but i already know that. i asked why dont Sodium and Magnesium have similar properties when they both are similar to lithium in properties.

no sodium does not show similar property to magnesium as lithium show to magnesium the diagonal relationship is valid only for lithium and magnesium to show similar properties not for sodium

let take an example -calcium also belonging to magnesium group so it is not possible that sodium also with calcium similar properties this is not a mathematics it is a chemistry which only valid for rules and and all things are experimental
