Magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2 is a base because of the OH- ions. Acids forms H+ ions in water but magnesium hydroxide won't, it forms OH- ions

so it is an alkali....

Magnesium Hydroxide ( Mg(OH)2 ) is a base because it disassociates OH- ions in its aqueous solution.

And OH- ions are responsible for its basic nature.
