The reaction between Magnesium and chlorine to form magnesium chloride is a redox reaction.

Redox reaction

  • When a reaction occurs where one atom is oxidized while the other is reduced is called a redox reaction.
  • Here, Magnesium has an electronic configuration 1s_{2} 2s_{2} 2p_{6}3s_{2}. It loses two outer electrons to become a cation and gains an oxidation state of +2. Thus it is oxidized.
  • While chlorine has an electronic configuration 1s_{2} 2s_{2} 2p_{6}3s_{2}3p_{5}. It gains one electron to become an anion and has a -1 oxidation state.
  • Thus, two chlorine atoms and one magnesium atom react to form Mg Cl_{2}. The reaction can be written as follows:

             Mg + Cl_{2} = MgCl_{2}
