So,Magnesium does not react with cold water but yes It reacts with hot water to form magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen and starts floating due to the bubbles of hydrogen gas sticking to its surface. As the Bubbles move up it pulls magnesium with it.

The overall density of Mg becomes less due to adsorption of H2 gas. This makes it float on the water surface.

magnesium metal does not react with cold water. it react with hot water to form magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen.
Mg + 2H2O ------Mg(OH)2 + H2
in this reaction a piece of magnesium metal starts floating in water due to the bubbles of hydrogen gas sticking to its surface.
