Aim of the experiment: Magnetic field due to a straight wire carrying current.
Materials Required: Cardboard, wire, battery, iron fillings, tap key
Procedure:
Take a straight wire and pierce it through the cardboard vertically.
Connect the ends of the wire to battery and a tap key.
Spread some iron fillings on the cardboard around the wire.
Close the tap key.
Tap the cardboard.
We notice that the iron fillings around the wire arrange themselves in concentric circles.
The magnetic field produced due to a current-carrying conductor has the following characteristics: It encircles the conductor. It lies in a plane perpendicular to the conductor. Reversal in direction of current flow reverses the direction of the field.
