Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He was a member of the Jain faith and by following its principles, developed the concept of non-violent civil disobedience. He lived for a time in South Africa and was no doubt exposed to Christianity. Whether this exposure influenced his selfless generosity and concern for humanity is a moot point.
