Jyotiba Govindrao Phule (1827-1890) also known as Mahatma Jyotirao was an eminent character in the history of India. He was a social reformer and thinker of the 19th Century India. His remarkable movement against the prevailing cast restriction in Indian society was a breakthrough in making the new sets of modern Indian society. He led a revolution against the denominations of Brahmins and stood for the rights of lower caste people and poor peasants. Jyotiba Phule was the first who encouraged girl’s education and fought for this throughout his life. This prominent persona is also believed to be the first (Hindu) to start an orphanage for unfortunate offsprings. Today nation is celebrating Mahatma Phule’s 191st birth anniversary. Let’s take a look at his social work which has made him Mahatma in Indian history.
