Let the cost price of one of the shirts be x.
Then the cost price of the other shirt will be (1000 -x)
The selling price of the shirt sold at a profit of 8% is :
1.08x
The selling price of the one sold at a 12% loss is :
0.88(1000 - x) = 880 - 0.88x
the total selling price = 1.08x + 880 - 0.88x = 0.2x + 880
Since there was no loss or gain then the selling price = buying price
0.2x + 880 = 1000
0.2x = 120
x = 600
The other shirt will cost :
1000 - 600 = 400
The cost price of each shirt is thus :
Rs 400 and Rs 600
