Tense

A verb is an essential part of sentense it is an action or doing word. The time of the action denoted is known as the tense.

There are three tenses depending upon the time of action :-

  • Present tense
  • Past Tense
  • Future Tense

Each tenses are divided further into Simple, Continouse( Progressive) and Perfect Tenses.

  • The present Tense :- Divided into Simple Present, Present Continous, Present perfect and Present Perfect continuous (progressive)

Simple Present tense :- It indicate a universal truth, a habitual action or an action of that moment.

  • Example :- The sun rises in the east.
  • Milk is white.

The present Continous (Progressive )Tense :- It is used mainly for an action which is going at the time of speaking

  • Example:- The child is crying.
  • It is raining heavily.

The present Perfect Tense :- It is used to indicate an action, which is just competed.

  • Example :- Have you read today's headline.
  • The peon has opened the office and has dusted the furniture.

Present Perfect Continous (Progressive) Tense :- It is used to indicate action which began in the past and is still continuing.

  • Example:- Asif has been singing for fifteen minutes.
  • The contestants have been practising their dance item since an hour.

  • The past tense it is divided into Simple past, past Continous, past perfect and Past perfect Continous Tense.

Simple Past Tense :- The action is took place some time ago.

  • Example :- The car stopped at the signal.
  • My friend acted his part very well.

Past Continous Tense :- Indicate an action which was going on in the past at a certain point of time.

  • Example :- I was writing an essay.
  • The men were trying hard to push the jeep.

The past Perfect tense :- Indicate an action that was completed at some time in the past.

  • Example :- Asif had gone to sleep when his father returned from office.
  • The bakery had closed before we went there.

The past Perfect Continous :- formed by adding had been to the ing from the verb.

  • Example :- Many people had been gathering to catch a glimpse of the actor.
  • The student of std 10 had been playing football.

  • Future Tense is divided into Simple Future, future Continous, future perfect, future perfect Continuous.

Simple Future Tense :- shall is used with the pronoun I and we only.

  • Example :- I shall always remember this incident.
  • The worker shall go on strike

Future Continous Tense :- Indicat an action that is expected to be continue for some time at a later date.

  • Example :- My brother will be acting in two films
  • Shortly he will be taking up a new job.
