                                                      TENSE

Tenses refer to changes in the form of verb that help in determining the state, time and duration of a specific action. Tenses are divided into the following kinds :

1. PAST TENSE

a) Past Simple Tense

It is used for actions that happened before the present time.

eg. I played the piano.

b) Past Continuous Tense

It is used for actions that began in the past and have recently stopped.

eg. I was playing the piano.

c) Past Perfect Tense

It is used for actions that happened at some time in the past before some other action happened.

eg. I had played the piano when the doorbell rang.

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense

It is used for actions that began in the past and continued for some time in the past.

eg. I had been playing the piano.

2. PRESENT TENSE

a) Present Simple Tense

It is used for actions happening right now.

eg. I play the piano.

b) Present Continuous Tense

It is used for actions that are taking place right now and may continue into the future.

eg. I am playing the piano.

c) Present Perfect Tense

It is used for actions that happened at an undefined time in the past or that started in the past and continue to the present time.

eg. I have played the piano.

d) Present Perfect Continuous Tense

It is used to refer to actions that began in the past and have continued till now.

eg. I have been playing the piano.

3. FUTURE TENSE

a) Future Simple Tense

It is used for actions that have not taken place as yet.

eg. I will play the piano.

b) Future Continuous Tense

It is used for actions that will happen in the future and will continue for some length of time.

eg. I will be playing the piano.

c) Future Perfect Tense

It is used for actions that will be completed before some other action in the future.

eg. I will have played the piano by the time mother returns from her trip.

d) Future Perfect Continuous Tense

It is used for actions that will continue till a specified time in the future

eg. I will have been playing the piano.
