On the basis of their properties all elements can be divided into :
[tex]\bullet Metals \\\bullet Non metals [/tex]
\displaystyle\text{physical properties of metals and nonmetals :}
[tex]\displaystyletext{ Characteristics of Metals :}\\\ [/tex]
⇒Metals are solids at room temperature except mercury
⇒Metals are malleable.
⇒Metals are ductile.
⇒Metals are good conductors of electricity and heat.
⇒Metals are lustrous.
⇒Metals are usually strong. They have high tensile strength.
⇒Metals are sonorous.
⇒Generally all metals are hard except sodium and potassium.

chemical properties :
⇒Metal reacts with oxygen to form metal oxides .
⇒Metal reacts with water to form hydroxides and hydrogen gas.
⇒Metals reacts with acid to form Salt and hydrogen gas.
except Cu,Au,Ag do not produce H2 gas with dilute acids
⇒Metals reacts with base to form salt and H2 gas.

whereas :
Non metal Physical properties:
⇒Non metals exists at room temperature as solids, liquids and gases.
⇒Non metals are Brittle.
⇒Non metals are not ductile
⇒Non metals are poor conductors of heat and electricity
⇒Non metals are not lustrous   except Iodine and Diamond
⇒Non metals are not strong.
⇒Most of the solid non metals are quite soft.
⇒Non metals are not sonorous.

chemical properties of Non metals:
⇒Non metals Reacts with oxygen to form non metal oxides .
⇒Non metals do not react with water.
⇒Non metals do not react with dilute acids.
⇒Some non metals reacts with bases like NaOH.
