Answer:

There are three timelines in Indian history:

  • Ancient Period (before the 8th century)
  • Medieval Period (between 8th - 18th century)
  • Modern Period (after the 18th century)

Explanation:

Ancient Period

The Rig Veda (written in Sanskrit, 1500 BCE), the Ramayana (written in Sanskrit, 500 BCE), and the Mahabharata (written in Sanskrit, 400 BCE) made up the first ancient Indian literature of the first millennium BCE. The Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda, and Mahabharata were all part of the Hindu religious texts known as the Vedas. Hindu epics in the form of Valmiki's Ramayana and Mehrishi Ved Vyas' Mahabharata were both composed in epic Sanskrit.

Medieval Period

Indian literature first attracted attention in the Middle Ages. The two most well-known Indian poets at this time were Sant Kabir and Tulsidas. Indian literature thereafter began to be written in a variety of languages, including Malayali, Bengali, Manipuri, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Urdu, Rajasthani, and Telugu, among others, throughout the medieval era.

Modern Period

During the anti-colonial uprising against the British Empire in India, modern Indian literature was created. Indian authors have told their stories and portrayed the Indian experience using Western literary styles such as essays, drama, and fiction.

Indian writers were more aware of their surroundings as a result of industrialization and urbanization. As Indian authors started to question particular institutions and conventions, science and rationality played an important role in modern Indian literature. Modern Indian literature produced new gods in their existing culture, the gods being man and nature, rather than criticizing the themes of pre-modern Indian literature, which were centered around concepts of otherworldliness.
