This none of my business attitude needs to be discarded.
I belong to a small village(40–50 families)in Darjeeling, West Bengal. Growing up in the village was the best thing about my childhood. In my times we spent our 3 months long winter holidays attending balvikas programmes (child development project undertaken by Sathya Sai devotees), playing different games, cleaning streets as guided by balvikas teachers, doing bhajans (singing religious hymns), organising pujas etc. All of this kept us occupied. It doesn't mean we never got in trouble but we never troubled our families.
Last winter when I went to my village I saw dirty, empty streets and grounds, silent evenings (no bhajans) and regular fights. On spending few days there I got to know how badly the kids has been spoilt here. I spoke to the balvikas guru and she told the kids donot show any interest in it anymore.
My aunt informed me the kids are into drugs. I found it very disheartening that so family families have been affected by this issue. There is group of 5–6 boys of age group 12–20 who are the main ones passing this legacy of drugs. They ask the younger ones to work for them. Marijuana is something available locally in abundance. It used to be in our times too but nobody used it. When their families stopped giving them money they began to rob houses and shops. Recently three boys of my village was caught in robbery.
My village needs awareness programme very badly. Every household every parent has an important role to play in the way it's society functions. If one kid is into bad habit that is eventually going to spread to other kids as well. Parents nowawdays tend to think that if someone's child is spoilt let him do as he wishes. It's none of my business but in the long run the spoilt child spoils his/her won child as well. So it's everyone's business in the end. Such kind of thinking and behaviour is very essential in an environment like my village where every household relies heavily on society.
Hoping for the good old days to revive.
