Consumer rights protect individuals from exploitation, unfair practices, and deceptive advertising by merchants and service providers.

Some of the key consumer rights include:

  • Right to safety: The right to be protected against goods and services that are hazardous to life and property.
  • Right to be informed: The right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, and standard of goods or services.
  • Right to choose: The right to choose from a variety of goods and services at competitive prices.
  • Right to be heard: The right to have grievances redressed and to participate in the consumer protection process.
  • Right to consumer education: The right to be educated about consumer laws and policies.

These rights are protected by various consumer protection laws, including the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, which lays down the procedures for the enforcement of consumer rights. As consumers, it is important to understand and assert our rights to ensure that we receive fair treatment in the marketplace.
