Untouchability has been one of the major stigmas of our country since ancient times.

It has been based on an age old caste system which put untouchables or dalits in the lowest strata of society.

This was combated to a large extent by Mahatma Gandhi initially, who welcomed the untouchables openly into his ashrams.

Further along the line, Dr. B R Ambedkar fought for equality of the dalits by ensuring reservation of seats in educational institutions for the lower caste population.
