My father had to rally struggle very hard before he became successful. He did not have as many facilities as the children enjoy these days. His father’s income was meager and the family could barely both ends meet. He would go to school on foot. He had to work at a shop part time in order to supplement the father’s income.

Sometimes, he got held at the shop until 10 p.m. at night. Often while returning home, he would look at stars which inspired him. After taking his dinner, he would sit in a corner of the room which he had to share with his brothers and sisters; he would study late into night – sometimes until 2 a.m. in the morning.

Thus many years passed before he completed his post graduation. He got a job at a school where he began teaching. Soon he became quite popular among the students. However, he did not stop improving. His passion for reading along with strength of character honed him into a wonderful human being. He thought of writing a book on his struggles and how he never gave up. The book became a huge success. Two million copies were sold in just three months.

After becoming so successful, he often looked at the same stars that he used to look at while returning home during the struggling days. He would wonder at the difference in his life. In the past he did not have money; but now he had plenty of money. He felt proud of the hard struggle he had to do; he was grateful he had a sweet home where his loving parents always supported him and motivated him.

Happy Is He Who Happy Does

Rahul came running towards me and said, "Thank you so much Tashi, I really don't know how to thank you today. I don't know what I would have done if you had not helped me today."  I held his hand in mine and tried to convince him that it was just a friendly gesture and I valued his emotions. Then both of us went to our home bidding bye for the day.

Rahul studied in my class ever since I came to Delhi and took admission in DPS. My father always gave me pocket money as he believed that it would teach me how to handle money and, in fact, he was right to some extent, for I was always able to save some which I kept in my piggy bank. I was happy to notice the increasing weight of my piggy bank every month.

It so happened that Rahul's father met with an accident and was bed-ridden initially for more than a year. Due to medical expenses and absence of anyone to look after their business, his father had a textile factory, they incurred heavy loss. The whole family was struggling to maintain expenses, so Rahul applied for fee concession. The school Principal exempted fifty percent fees. But the remaining fifty percent was also not easy for Rahul to pay. When the new session began, Rahul didn't know what to do and he had lost all interest in study as well as life.  Though I could realize everything, I never asked him anything. One day I went to fee counter and asked the amount that Rahul had to pay for the year.

When I came back home, I counted money in my piggy bank and found it was too less. When dad came back from his office in the evening, I told him about Rahul and my wish to help him out. Initially he tried to ignore me, but when he felt I was serious he promised that he would do something. He, with the help of his colleague who works for arranging sponsorship for unprivileged children arranged to make the payment and when Rahul came to know about it, he had no words to thank me. I was happy that I would be of some help to someone in need. My father was very delighted with my empathetic behavior and said, "You are my shining star that would always show path to others."
