A carbon skeleton refers to the longest parent sequence or chain of carbon atoms that are within a given molecule. The carbon atoms form bonds together. Usually, these bonds in between the carbon atoms do not break while in a reaction.

The basic five-carbon compound is called as Pentane. The carbons can be arranged in different ways and at different positions with varying bonds of single and double bonds, which in turn change the number of Hydrogen atoms attached to it.

The 3 most common carbon skeletons of a 5-carbon compound are - Pentane, isopentane, and cyclopentane.
