Answer:

The human respiratory system consists of a group of organs and tissues which help in exchange of gases and functions in breathing.

Explanation:

The detailed explanation of different parts and functions of respiratory system are as following:

  1. Nose: The nose is made up of exterior nostrils and are divided by a cartilaginous structure (septum), which further forms the right nostril and left nostril. Tiny hair follicles are present in the inner lining of nostrils that functions as defense mechanism against external particles.
  2. Pharynx : The nasal chambers, called the pharynx, open up into a large hollow space. It is both air and food a growing course. This functions by stopping food particles from reaching the wind-pipe. The epiglottis is an elastic cartilage that acts as a bridge between the larynx and the oesophagus by allowing air to move through the airway to the lungs, and food to move through the gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Larynx :The larynx is surrounded by two cartilaginous cords. We are at the stage where we join the pharynx and the trachea. It is also called the apple of Adam, or the box of voices. It is the component that rises and falls during the swallowing of particles from food. It creates vibration as air passes into the center of the cavity
  4. Trachea: The windpipe or trachea rises below the larynx and passes down to the throat. The trachea walls comprise C-shaped cartilaginous rings that give the trachea toughness and sustain it by expanding fully. The trachea reaches into the breastbone further down and splits into two bronchi, one for each lung.
  5. Bronchi: The trachea divides into two tubes, or bronchi, which separately join each lung. The bronchi are classified into principal, tertiary, and bronchioles grouped into small air-sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are minute, single-celled air bags with thin walls. This allows for the flow of molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide into or away from the bloodstream.
  6. Lungs : Lungs are the human and other vertebrates 'main respiratory centres. They are situated near the backbone and on either side of the neck, in the thoracic cavity of the chest. They are the pair of large, spongy organs primarily involved in exchanging gases between blood and air. The right lung is relatively larger and heavier compared to the left lung.
