the needle of magnetic compass deflects due to overlapping of magnetic field lines. The electric current and compass both have their own field lines which overlapped. When we switch off the current, the compass returns to normal position as only it's field lines are present.
Compass is generally aligned in North-South direction due to earth's magnet. Earth also has a north-south magnet. The compass's south aligns with earth's north and compass's north aligns with earth's south as opposites attract.
Both these phenomenon work together to align compass needle back to north-south direction.
