Many of our spinners export cotton yarn while apparal manufacturers have to import fabric because:-

1. Spinning is highly developed in India. India has the second largest capacity of spindles. Spinning produces high quality yarn.

2. Most of the apparal manufacturers cannot use much of the high quality yarn produced by the spinners.

3. Weaving is mostly done in small and fragmented units. As a result, weaving is mostly inadequate.

4. Due to factors like low productivity of labour, inadequate power supply, and poor infrastructure weavers have to import fabric.

5. India contributes to one fourth of the world's yarn production but only 4 per cent of the world's garment production because of inadequacy in the weaving sector.
