Secondary metabolites are the compounds produced by plants for which no role has yet been discovered in the primary functions of the plants like photosynthesis, respiration, reproduction etc. Alkaloids, terpenoids or phenols are some of them. Most pharmaceuticals are based on these secondary metabolites but their misuse can create problems for example alkaloids interfere with neurotransmission, inhibit enzymes or can block ion channels hence they can cause hallucination, loss of coordination, vomiting, convulsions and death.
