Answer:

This question was asked in UPSC mains examination 2014 , GS paper 3 and I presume you are asking from that perspective. Keeping that in mind, I think a 250 word answer will be apt. So here it goes -

Explanation:

India had a strong and bitter colonial experience and a taste of capitalism's exploitative nature. British colonized India to serve as a source of raw material for its fast developing industries.

Indian manufacturing sector and crafts industry broke down due to competition from cheap European products and exploitative policies of British , forcing people to move from industries to land-based activities.

British simultaneously introduced western education and service sector in India so as to manage their colonial affairs smoothly.

The services like law, health , civil services , banking etc grew lucrative and were widely respected as they provided employment and status in colonial India.

The socio-capital Nehruvian economy was plagued by restrictions and red-tapism widely known as "license raj" and hence never gave the required impetus to industrial sector despite it being planning commissions priority.

On the contrary , western education gave an edge to english-speaking Indian demographic in world market.

Hence service sector grew rapidly in post-independent India and was seen as prestigious.

India can become a developed country without a strong industrial base like Switzerland but that is fraught with danger. A weak industrial sector makes India's economy fragile and highly susceptible to global fluctuations. There is no alternative to self-dependency when it comes to sovereignty of a nation-state. Make-in-India is a commendable approach in this direction.

India has a huge presence in global service sector. However , India should not lose the opportunity to develop as an manufacturing -giant which will give India a dominant position in this multi-polar world of today.
