Balwant Pandurang Kirloskar (1843 – 1885) was a prominent playwright and one of the pioneers of Marathi stage dramas. Going through personal hardships, he worked as school teacher, in the police department and as a revenue clerk, to support himself.
He had a strong knowledge of Sanskrit. In 1873, his first prose play was presented before the public, which received good review. The next year, he founded the Kirloskar Natak Mandali. It was one of the first and most sought-after performing companies in Marathi theatre until 1913.
