Given : Marcia is at a store with a 20% off sale.

She also has a coupon for an additional 10% off the sale price.

To Find : Prove or disprove the following statement:

20% discount on the original price of an item, followed by the use of a 10% off coupon, results in a total discount of 30%.

Solution:

Disapprove

20% discount on the original price of an item, followed by the use of a 10% off coupon, does not  results in a total discount of 30%.

Verification :

Let say item Price  = 100P

20% off sale.  = (20/100)100P = 20P

Sale price = 100P - 20P = 80P

coupon for an additional 10% off the sale price.

= (10/100)80P

= 8P

Final Price = 80P - 8P = 72P

Total Discount = 100P - 72P = 28P

Total Discount = (28P/100P) * 100  =  28 %

28 % ≠ 30 %
